Your course:

The SSI freediver course is the entry level freediving
recreational course for water lovers! With emphasis on
safety, relaxation, technique and safety – it’s the
perfect certified foundation course to start your
underwater breath holding journey!

Great! What next?
Your digital materials will give you everything you need to know as a beginner freediver to safely
freedive recreationally, including:
✓ Introduction to freediving
✓ Freediving breathing cycle
✓ Basic freediving physiology
✓ Equalisation
✓ Freediving techniques
✓ Safety in freediving
✓ Freediving disciplines
✓ & much more!

You can read them at your leisure, working through the knowledge review questions and final exam in
the comfort of your own home at your own pace before the start of your course.
The courses are run in small groups and all equipment is provided. The practical knowledge review
session (theory) and the first pool session is run over one full day in Howden near Goole, the second
pool session is run during one of our weekly club sessions on a Wednesday evening in the Mount
school swimming pool.

The open water sessions are run over a full day in one of the inland dive sites – usually 8 acre lake or
Capernwray diving centre, 8 acre inland dive site, Capernwray inland dive site

In the practical sessions, you will have the opportunity to practice the freediving breathing cycle on
land in the classroom before experiencing holding your breath whilst relaxing and floating on the
surface of the water in a private pool. During the second pool session, you will experience how to
comfortably swim distances in the pool on a single breath whilst remaining calm and relaxed.
In your open water sessions, you will apply the skills you have learned in the pool to diving in open
water, introducing further techniques specific to depth diving, such as equalisation, duck diving and
using a lanyard.

Essential Info

The boring (but important) stuff:
Sessions: All theory sessions, breathing session & pool session 1
Time: 09:30am – finish
Venue: Bishops Manor, Howden DN14 7BL

There is parking available at bishop’s manor car park, which is usually about £3 for the day.
Once you’ve arrived – send a text or call 07828198091 and I will come down to open the door to the office building for you.

Please make sure you have read through the digital learning materials and completed your knowledge
reviews & online exam. Please also make sure you have completed the online liability waiver, medical
statement and responsible freediver code through mySSI.

Wear comfortable, warm clothing/layers as we will be sitting in a classroom for most of the day, going
over the theory that is included in your digital materials and doing the practical breathing session.
There will be plenty of breaks where you can stretch your legs and make a drink.
Tea/coffee is provided & there is a water cooler, but please feel free to bring any drinks, snacks and lunch with you. There are nearby shops where you can purchase food if you prefer. Having a good breakfast beforehand is advised & then something light for lunch/snacks.

We will be doing static breath holds in a private swimming pool nearby in the afternoon, so bring your
swimwear/towel etc. If you already own a well-fitting mask, snorkel, waterproof stopwatch & 3mm or
5mm wetsuit, you can bring this with you to use, however, all equipment will be provided on the day.
The finish time is variable, depending on how quickly we go through all the material & how much talking about diving we do! But allow a full day – I would roughly expect sometime between 4-5pm finish time.

Sessions: Pool session 2
Time: 18:45-20:30pm
Venue: The Mount school swimming pool, Dalton terrace, York, YO24 4DD (parking charges apply)
Meet: Swimming pool entryway

The car park for the mount school is chargeable (please ensure you pay for the correct amount of
parking, as fines are enforced by a private company) and there is limited free on street parking on
Driffield Terrace (be careful of parking restrictions in the area and be sure to read signage thoroughly to
avoid any fines). Walk through the Mount school car parks & tennis courts, turn right at the gymnasium –
The entrance to the pool is nearest the railings in the building in front of you.
We will meet at the swimming pool entryway for the dynamic component of your pool freediver course.
Changing facilities are available from 18:45-19:00. However, I recommend wearing your swimwear under your clothes. We will be in the pool from 7pm, so try to eat a few hours earlier if possible, or have a substantial lunch & snacks afterwards. Bring your swimwear/towel etc. Please try to avoid bringing
valuables wherever possible.

Once the pool & theory components are successfully completed, you are welcome to practice your new
found skills in the weekly pool training sessions as a qualified pool freediver on a Wednesday night 7-
8.30pm at the Mount school swimming pool. The sessions are £10 per person per session, or £15
including kit hire, or £35 if you would like coaching during your session with an instructor. Overland
Underwater runs a loyalty scheme too, where your 10th session is free!

For the open water component of your course, we will have two sessions at one of the inland dive sites.
We usually dive either 8 acre lake or Capernwray.
Dates are water temperature dependent as you will be wearing a 5mm freediving specific wetsuit.
This is where you will build on the skills you developed in the pool and learn the additional techniques for open water freediving. (please note, entry fees to the open water dive sites are not included).

After successful completion, you will be a certified freediver! Your certification is recognised globally &
you’re welcome to join in on any Inspire Freediving/Overland Underwater recreational club day or event!
